Baba Beach Club Phuket, Thailand

Baba Beach Club, located north of Phuket on the seemingly endless sands of Natai Beach, is the sassy little sister to Sri Panwa, one of Thailand’s most fashionable hotels. Expect day drinking, rock star-ready rooms, and flaming sunsets.

Baba has an idyllic spot on Natai Beach, a six-mile run of golden sands backed by tropical forest, north of the island of Phuket. It’s an area yet to be exploited by mass tourism so while you won’t find many restaurants, bars or shops, you will find blissfully empty beaches, pristine rainforest, hidden waterfalls and boat trips to the beautiful Similan Islands. The hotel is an easy, generally traffic-free 25-minute drive from the airport.

Style & character:

Purple butterfly-pea tea and jasmine-scented cold towels await your arrival. Putting a playful twist on the area’s Chinese-Thai heritage, the reception area features artfully-aged lacquer furniture, colorful ceramic stools, and gold-flecked wall murals. From here, circular doorways open onto a blue and black-striped swimming pool trimmed with fuchsia pink parasols and fronted by a palm-studded beach. A regular roster of pool parties and visiting DJs keep the vibe upbeat.

Service & facilities:

Baba has been designed for fun in the sun. There’s a perma-soundtrack of house music playing by the pool, a collection of candy-striped loungers on the beach and a watersports shack where you can try out complimentary kayaks, bodyboards, and stand-up paddleboards. Complimentary bicycles are also available. Pick one up and pedal past lush green rice fields dotted with water buffalo, prim Buddhist temples and tiny rural villages. There’s no spa yet but massages can be arranged in your suite or – even better – on the beach with the sound of the sea lulling you to sleep.

Baba’s staff are big on smiles but seemed slow and unsure of themselves when it came to service during my visit, particularly in the restaurant, where orders were continually mixed up, late or completely wrong.

The resort has 16 suites and two five-bedroom villas available, with a further 61 suites and villas being added throughout the rest of 2018. For now, all of the suites are positioned around the pool and come with sleekly serene interiors with lofty ceilings, cool stone floors, dark woods, and enormous feathery beds. All rooms come with kitchenettes (with complimentary drinks and snacks in the minibars), big white subway-tiled bathrooms, top tech (complete with clubby Soundcloud playlist) and a few have private pools.

Food & drink:

The hotel’s only restaurant is spread over two stories and overlooks the swimming pool. An à la carte breakfast, featuring tropical fruit plates, power juices, eggs, pancakes, and pastries, as well as Thai, Asian and healthy options, is included in the rate and worth getting out of bed for. An extensive menu of Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Italian and international dishes is available throughout the rest of the day, which means you won’t run out of options.

Value for money:

Doubles from THB 16,478 (£374) in low-season; and from THB 21,186 (£481) in high, including breakfast, soft drinks, beers and snacks from the in-room minibar, daily complimentary fitness activities and Wi-Fi.
