Spain, Fans of Star Wars, The Simpsons and Tintin will love these luxe apartments, with décor based on literary, film and television characters. But the location alone is a good enough reason to stay in this remodeled palace on a medieval square, where you sink straight into the traditional character of Madrid.
The apartments are on a quiet square in the heart of Madrid de Los Austrias, the oldest, most beautiful and most atmospheric part of the city — you feel as if you are in a village staying here. The San Miguel gourmet market is a minute away and visible from some of the apartments, such as Harry and Sally. Others give onto a private courtyard with a view of the belltower of the elegant Baroque church of San Miguel.
The Plaza Mayor is 220yd (200 meters) away and it is 440yd (400 meters) to the Teatro Real opera house and 550yd (500 meters) to the Royal Palace. Sol and Opera metro stations are both about seven minutes’ walk. Madrid’s most traditional bars and restaurants are an easy stroll from the building and there are lots of shops nearby.
Style & character:
The distinctive pink building was previously a palace belonging to an aristocratic family and dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. Pushing open the grand wooden door, you enter a secret world that is surprisingly sleek and modern.
The apartments are all different from themed décor based on famous couples from history, books, films, television, comics or cartoons, including Thelma and Louise, Don Quijote and Dulcinea, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo and Bonnie and Clyde. Quotes from the characters are written on the white-brick walls. You can book whichever apartment you find most appealing, which is a big plus and means you know exactly what you are getting.
The owners are art lovers and there are some impressive pieces on display, including originals by Picasso and Damien Hirst. Books about Madrid and Spain are left lying around for you to browse through.
Service & facilities:

Some, including Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, have bioethanol fireplaces. All have double beds rather than twins, plus a sofa bed.
Smart kitchen areas are very well equipped with a full-size fridge and freezer, dishwasher, microwave, oven, and induction hob, as well as a toaster, kettle, coffee machine, juicer and stick blender — handy if you have to prepare baby food.
Elegant stone bathrooms have large showers, Hierbas de Ibiza products, and good hairdryers. There are enough wooden hangers to cope comfortably with even the most extensive holiday wardrobe — great if you are coming for a special occasion and need to hang your outfit up properly — and irons and boards are provided.
